The Gospel of Mark portrays Jesus as a bit of a
radical. He is not the Jesus you see in the
paintings on your grandmother’s wall—you know the
one…the handsome man with long flowing hair with his
hand on a lamb’s head looking full of peace and
contentment. Mark’s Jesus is a Rabbi who confronts
hypocrisy in the Jewish elite. He is a teacher who,
unlike all other teachers, speaks with authority.
He is a “miracle worker” like no other who heals and
casts out demons and even raises the dead through
the overflow of the power of God. He speaks with
Centurions and with Greek women. He calls his
disciples hard hearted and dull all the while
pulling them aside to teach them great truths of the
coming Kingdom of God. He is a man of action.
Come and join us on Sundays as we work through this
gospel account. As we study, we remember that Mark
was the pastor of a persecuted congregation of
people who were either exiled from Rome or living in
the catacombs below Rome’s flourishing society.
They desperately needed to know that Jesus lived and
served and died for all men. They needed the
assurance that Jesus suffered and was persecuted and
was kicked out of His own town simply because He
spoke the truth in love. How about you? Is this
the Jesus you depend on for your very life. He is
Savior and LORD of all. He preached the coming
Kingdom and then died to bring that Kingdom into our
world.
Read Mark. Study and mediate on the words. See
Jesus through new eyes.
